De Gendt close to stage win!

5 September 2012

Thomas De Gendt was close to another stage victory in a grand tour!

The Vacansoleil-DCM rider was in the front with Dario Cataldo and both got a maximum lead of 15 minutes. The queen stage of the Vuelta a Espana featured some big climbs with a finish on the difficult Cuitu Negru.

The two leaders made a pact to not attack and see who would be the strongest on the steep sections of the final climb towards the finish. De Gendt saw Cataldo cross the finish line only a few metres in front of him: "I wanted to win and did my best, but Cataldo was stronger" said De Gendt.

After his impressive solo and stage win on the Stelvio in this years Giro d'Italia De Gendt went to the Vuelta to get another stage win. He was part of three successful breakaway's already and said it would not be the last time: "I really want a stage win and will keep on trying!"
